Colleges (like Fanshawe) adopt Second Life for Online Education

Second Life LogoYep, you heard it. There has been an increasing number of colleges and universities in the area (at least, my area) that have adapted their online education to Second Life.

Some of you may be thinking it may be neat, others might think that they are wasting their money.

To what extent do these colleges mean by using Second Life as an online educational medium? Read on to find out.

Second Life:

If someone here does not know what second life is, then I shall try to briefly explain it. It is a metaverse, an online reality that lets you choose your character (”Avatar”) and basically do whatever you want.

It of course, takes a bit of money, but the things that you could do are pretty much endless. It lets you interact with others around you, make things, buy/sell whatever you desire. There are events, malls, buildings, you name it, someone built it. Consider sims but much less limited and you can create any aspect that you wish, but online.

Colleges/Universities:

I knew of a few post secondary institutions that have been toying with the idea but what sparked this is that today, my local college (Fanshawe), bought a moderate sized island in the hopes to use Second Life as a medium for online education.

Basically:

I ask this to you in a rather interesting question. Do YOU think it is a good idea? Yes or no? Why or why not?

I would really like to hear the opinions on this, so keep them coming ;)

Wordpress 2.5 Might be Delayed yet again

Wordpress 2.5 delayed againHere we have it. On the second announced day of what is supposed to be a new Wordpress frame open to the general public.

Previously, the date scheduled for this was around the 10th of March, and then the 17th, and by the looks of their roadmap, they may have to delay it further.

Countdown: 4 hours.

According to the Wordpress Roadmap Tracker, the release date of Wordpress 2.5 should be due within 4 hours of this post. At this single point in time, they have closed 621 tickets and still have 375 to go. Though some of those tickets are suggestions which might not be fit into this release, there are still a few bugs left to shuffle through.

Would a delay be bad?

Short answer yes…. long answer no. Some people (like myself) have managed to choose out a new selection of plugins and design, while others are patiently waiting. I am a bit of both.

I do not mind waiting a bit more if it is delayed again. Why? I would rather have Wordpress take the time and go through all tickets rather then just spit out a new version that has stability problems. They are trying their hardest to make the next release possible (as soon as possible) with as little problems and bugs.

Beta Tests and Bug Fixes.

With the beta releases already out to the testers, there have been some people that have already created some noteworthy and unique plugins.

So keep in mind, that although it may be delayed, it is delayed for a good reason ;)
