Blogging Mistakes that could hurt you

Blogging MistakesThese are a few mistakes that I have noticed around the ‘Blogosphere’ while trying to succumb to my boredom.

I noticed that it happens a lot more in newer bloggers than not. I noticed this a lot more lately than previously.

Actually, I wanted to avoid blogging about this but this seems like the perfect time to do it.

Feedburner Reader Count:

If you have, oh, lets say 7 feedburner readers, why display that image? Personally, I would not display anything less than 100-150 because it would go to show that you do not know what you are doing, or have not been ‘in the game’ that long. Why would I choose to advertise/comment on a blog that only has 7 readers? Take the reader off.

Do not clutter, Clean up after yourself:

Sure, we want money. All of us do. However, you should not clutter your blog with 100+ images and ads to do it. If anything, people will find that annoying. Instead of spamming us with redunant google ads, why not try to work on actual content and traffic building?

That way, 3 months from now, you can do private ads and make 5x more on private ads compared to what you make with other ad networks on your blog. Added Note: No using glitter graphics (there are some exceptions however), it hurts the eyes. :)
BlogSpot/Blogger:

Why do it? Why subject your readers to that? If you are going to blog, blog right. Get yourself a $9/yr domain name and a $4.95/mo hosting package. Do not wanna spend much money on it? I will give you the links to sign up under JUST so you can earn $40 back. Seriously!

Use the contact form! E-mail me! I will set you up! hah. There are some blogs that are an exception, but if I usually see Blogspot or Blogger, I skip it. If anything, I drop, then skip it.

Templates are the Devil:

So you are using a run-of-the-mill template that is seen on the default wordpress or b2evolution. Take a few days and work on a new one. If not get one of your friends to help you who know what they are doing.

If anything, get someone to do it for you for a real cheap price. I grow tired of seeing the generic blue wordpress theme (Kubric/Cubric default) on a lot of new blogs.

That is so true.. I am beginning to see this a lot more lately. If I had the time, I would contact every single one of them.

You do bring up a good point about the reader. I only have the button up because I only have 25 readers at the moment.

I think my comfort zone would be at 50, if not 75.

noob(10 March 2008 at 2:03 pm)3

I sent you a message from the contact button about that hosting thing you mentioned. I am looking for a new host and wouldn’t mind paying a bit less ;)

ThinkBlogger(10 March 2008 at 2:53 pm)4

@ Jake: I started to see quite a few over the last 2-3 days. Its not saying that they are bad blogs, its just from a marketing standpoint, they have mistakes.

I did them too when I first started. Until I smartened up ;) hehe. Everyone does it though.

@Amanda: 75 is a good comfort zone. I don’t think I will display mine for a while. I don’t really see the need to boast, but thats because I am not trying to create a buzz, but just a loyal readership. *flexes at his 55% bookmarked ratio* lol.

Awesome Post. Like always ;) Its good to know that I am not the only person thinking this.

This is all really good advice. I came across your blog through EC and have found a ton of useful info for this new blogger.

I was wondering, where did you get your social media buttons at the bottom of each post? They are just the perfect size. The ones I found are so small that you can’t tell what they are. If you can take a second to email me with that info at [e-mail hidden] I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

ThinkBlogger(11 March 2008 at 5:37 am)7

@Jami: I sent you an e-mail with the link you requested. I hope it was what you were looking for!

Kelly(11 March 2008 at 12:06 pm)8

I found you through EC, too. And while not extremely new to blogging, I am new to actually having traffic. Whoo hoo. And after this weekend’s fiasco over at Google, I’ve registered a new domain for my blog and will work on getting it moved over the next few weeks.

And ok, maybe I’ll take the feedburner counter thing off. :)

ThinkBlogger(11 March 2008 at 1:33 pm)9

@ Kelly: I’ve seen your blog before while dropping cards. I would NOT count you in the same category.

Though from a marketing perspective, it may just seem a bit troubling if someone has under 50 readers yet expect to get a lot from monthly banners and what-not.

Good luck with switching over to a new domain ;)

Having started out on Blogger myself and still being an owner of blogs using that platform, I have to say that it’s unfair to discriminate. Just because a blogger chooses to use a free host doesn’t mean that they have nothing to offer the blogosphere. There are some bloggers who still blog for fun. They write excellent and informative content just because they love it…not because they want to make money or because they are trying to uphold some type of status.

Then there are those who choose to blog in spite of the fact that there just isn’t extra cash for hosting. Content is King…not WordPress.

So, I’m taking my leave now. I can’t support a blog that seeks to eliminate the little guy based on choice of software or template. Blogging is not an instance of survival of the fittest.

@Ava: I kept this comment and approved it for multiple reasons. The main one, is coming up in a post right now.

These were some great tips. I was one of the people that got a hosting package under Thinkblogger and he was awesome about it. I am getting $70 back. :)
Ava was a bit harsh though. I do not see you as a power hungry shark yet, Tb ;)
Actually, after reading many of your posts, I signed up through RSS. If I didn’t dislike entrecard so much (with all the recent stuff going on around it), I would have definetely signed up for your contest.

ThinkBlogger(11 March 2008 at 6:22 pm)14

@ Jake: Thanks Jake. and hmm. no need to announce that, lol! but thanks anyway. I wanted to help you out because you have been a commenter from the beginning and you haven’t even put your URL in your comments.

I wouldn’t mind. ;) Besides, I might be installing comment-luv once I upgrade to wordpress 2.5, to pass some of the link love.

D(11 March 2008 at 6:32 pm)15

Don’t be too harsh on yourself, this post managed to get a lot of buzz and some people talking! :D
